Boosting your fertility with herbs

Trying to get pregnant? A healthy, nutrient-rich diet, exercise, reducing stress and good sleep will help, but recent studies have found that certain herbs can also have a positive effect on fertility. Here is a list of herbs that can be helpful.

Shatavari

Shatavari is rich in phytoestrogens, a group of naturally occurring compounds that has a similar chemical structure to oestrogen, which plays a major role in the reproductive cycle.

It also helps by reducing stress, which can cause fertility issues.

It also helps by reducing stress, which can cause fertility issues. It's also used for menopausal symptoms and to increase lactation. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has been used traditionally to treat fertility issues in men. It is believed to improve semen quality, erection and sperm count. It helps in improving male sexual health in disorders such as psychogenic impotence and unexplained infertility.

Liquorice

Liquorice helps detoxify and repair the liver, support the endocrine system and modulate the immune system. All three of these functions contribute to better overall hormonal health.

It is a plant rich in phytoestrogen and also helps balance blood sugar levels, acts as an anti-inflammatory, aids digestion and helps cervical mucus production.

When taking liquorice, always stick to the recommended dosage. Do not consume in large quantities.

Red Clover

Red clover is estrogen’s twin hormonally. Though not identical, they can both serve the same purpose, as red clover helps to thicken the uterine lining, which leads to better implantation and increases fertility.

Cinnamon

Just like other natural fertility herbs in this list, cinnamon also has multiple beneficial effects that contribute to its fertility boosting effects.

Cinnamon has been observed to reduce insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is believed to be one of the factors that cause PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) in women, which is a major cause of infertility and is believed to affect 1 in 10 women. Cinnamon also helps control heavy menstrual bleeding.

Nettles

Nettles are beneficial because they strengthen the uterus and kidneys. They naturally detoxify and remove harmful substances that can make it harder to get pregnant and give you a boost of vitamins and minerals.

Agnus castus (chasteberry)

Some small studies have suggested that agnus castus balances reproductive hormones and helps regulate the menstrual cycle. The irregular menstrual cycle also makes it difficult for many women to get pregnant.

Maca

Maca is a plant indigenous to the highlands of Peru. Growing in the volcanic soils of the highlands, Maca is rich in minerals and phytonutrients. It supports hormonal balance and boosts thyroid health. It also increases energy, stamina and libido.

Damiana

Damiana is a tonic, mild antidepressant, and central nervous system stimulant most commonly used as a herbal aphrodisiac for low libido, depression and anxiety especially around lovemaking, and even menstrual cycle irregularities. It stimulates nerves and increases blood flow to sexual organs.

Damiana has also been used in cases of loss of libido due to sexual trauma, lack of sexual desire and pleasure, and impotence. Damiana can help men overcome impotence and also modulate spermatorrhea, which is a condition that causes excessive, accidental ejaculations.
